If you draw water directly from a river or a lake, sometimes water can have excessive sediment that can plug up cartridge type filters very quickly. Excessive dirt, silt, particulate matter, etc can be a major problem in commercial, industrial or even domestic use. Turbid water is not only unpleasant to look at, it can be unsafe to drink and reduce life of water heaters, pumps & pump seals, valves and other equipment.
Rainfresh CBF1 automatic backwashable sediment filter provides excellent turbidity reduction without the need to change filters. It consists of a processed and graded rare natural mineral that has unique filtration properties and filters the water down to 5 nominal. After a pre-set amount of time, the system automatically undergoes a backwash cycle wherein all the trapped dirt/sediment goes to drain and the system is ready for use again. There are no replacement filters in this system and is virtually maintenance free. Excellent choice if your cartridge filters are plugging up quickly or your water has silt, mud, or excessive dirt.
BENEFITS
- Reduces heavy dirt, mud, sand and other particulates
- Filters down to 5 micron nominal making water clear. Installing a Rainfresh cartridge filter housing will further polish off the water
- No cartridges to change, no salt, no chemicals – cleans itself automatically
- Virtually maintenance free !

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1) When would I need the CBF1 Backwashable filter?
Certain water supplies that come from lakes, rivers or wells can have excessive sediment in the water. You may notice excessive sediment if your water is muddy (high turbidity), or if sediment settles at the bottom of a glass of water. Sometimes the water source is permanently turbid and sometimes excessive sediment only appears during certain times of the year, such as during the rainy season.
While some amount of particles or sediment is normal, excessive sediment plugs up cartridge filters quickly, sometimes in just days. Sediment can also cause corrosion of your plumbing system including valves, pipes and water heaters.
2) What does the Rainfresh CBF1 Filter do?
The Rainfresh CBF1 filter will remove sediment from ALL the water in house including bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, and even outside taps.
It will substantially prolong the life of cartridge filters and protect other water conditioning equipment that you may have from the damaging effects of excessive sediment.
3) How do I know if I have turbidity?
- If your water is discoloured, but sediment settles down to the bottom after some time
- If your cartridge filter is plugging up too soon
The best way to find out is to send a water sample to Rainfresh Water Lab for a FREE WATER ANALYSIS (Check with your store for details or visit www.rainfresh.ca).
4) How does the Rainfresh CBF1 Filter work?
CBF1 Filter features 1ft³ of a special grade filter medium that filters the water down to about 5 micron nominal. The large volume and surface area of the filter medium allows sediment to be filtered at various depths without causing any pressure loss.
After a few days (typically once every 3 days), the unit backwashes the filter media and dumps the trapped dirt down the drain. This way the filter works for years without the need to replace any filters. The backwash cycle is set for a default time of 2AM and lasts about 20 minutes It is completely automatic and controlled by an electronic valve
5) How much water does the CBF1 unit use when it backwashes?
In each backwash cycle (cleaning cycle), the unit uses water less than a load of laundry.
6) Will the Rainfresh CBF1 unit work with any kind of water pump?
The well pump must have a flow rate of over 5 GPM for the unit to operate.
7) Where do I install the Rainfresh CBF1 Filter?
The CBF1 filter should be installed just AFTER the pressure tank before the water pipe divides into hot and cold, so that ALL the water in the house gets treated. If you already have a water filter or conditioner, the CBF1 filter should be installed before it. This will improve the life of the conditioner or filter.
8) Should I install a cartridge filter after the CBF1 filter?
Yes, it is a good idea to install a cartridge filter such as Rainfresh FC100 AFTER the CBF1 filter. This will polish the water off and remove any trace fine sediment.
9) What do I need to do after the Rainfresh CBF1 Filter is installed?
After the initial programming, there’s nothing else you need to do. Enjoy years of sediment-free water.
10) Does the CBF1 filter use electricity?
Yes the unit requires a 110V AC power connection & stays plugged in all the time. However, it uses very little power, as much as a digital alarm clock
11) What happens if there is a power outage?
The unit will retain the time and day for 48 hours. The rest of the programmed settings are stored in a non-volatile memory and will not be lost during a power failure.
12) Is there a pressure loss through the system?
When properly sized, the system produces a very low pressure drop at service flow rates, usually < 10 psi.
13) Can I connect the backwash water to my septic tank?
Yes. The backwash water can be routed to the septic tank. If you are concerned about the sediment being routed to your septic system, please check with a septic tank specialist before installing the unit.
14) How long will the filter last?
The filter media will last up to 10 years depending on usage and water conditions. After that just the media needs to be replaced, this is quite easy to do.
