Rust is formed when dissolved iron (ferrous) oxidizes to a particle form (ferric). Homes on urban water supplies get rust from corrosion of old distribution piping which is common in many Canadian cities. Homes on private wells can have naturally occurring rust or through the well system. Rust is not considered as a health contaminant but is recommended to be removed for aesthetic reasons (taste, odour, colour, sediment and protection of plumbing devices such as water heater). Since rust is a particle, it can be removed by sediment filters. Homes on private wells that have high ferrous iron (dissolved) should consider a whole house iron reduction system.
A micron , also called micrometer, is a unit of measurement.
1 micron = 1/1000 mm (1/25,000th of an inch) is denoted by the letter µ.
Average human hair is about 75 micron in diameter and coarse dirt is about 40 micron . In filter cartridges, a micron rating refers to the smallest particle size in micron s that the filter cartridge is capable of removing. For example, a 30 micron cartridge will remove particulates as small as 30 micron while a 5 micron filter cartridge will remove particulates as small as 5 micron . The lower the micron rating of the filter cartridge, the tighter the filter and the smaller the particle size it can remove.
For sediment filters, generally a “nominal” rating is used, meaning that a high percentage of particles of the rated size are removed. An “Absolute” rating means that >99.99% of the particles of the rated size are removed. Rainfresh ceramic cartridges have a 0.3 micron absolute rating, meaning that they remove > 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 micron .

Awesome
My husband was very happy with this product and he is a very hard person to please.

Still has good flow rate
I use this one before my carbon filter to prolong the life of the carbon filter (which is more expensive) and remove the larger particles in our cottage system. Even with a low rating of 5 microns, it keeps up to the 5gal/minute flow restrictor (until it gets really dirty).

Great product
I change my filter every 3 months and you can see the difference when these filters are used. The sand/silt stays in the filter housing and does not go into the rest of the house.

Does what I want
I take my home prefiltered water from the lake and the 5 micron is used to remove fine particles and beaver fever from the water and it does that effectively

Works Great
This Rainfresh product works great to remove sediment and scale but the key is to change them at regular intervals which depend on your level sediment being drawn in.

Clean Lake Water
Have used two of these in serial at the cottage for about 5 years now. A 30 micron for sand and larger sediment and then the 5 for final filtration. It’s not enough to make the water potable but it’s definitely helped with Laundry and Dishes. Also improved Hot water for showers, taking out some of the lake colour. My system wouldn’t have the power to drive the 1 micron filter or the ceramics to eliminate all the e-coli. I use the clear body filter housings because it is easier to see the condition of the filter, the lake water changes sediment amounts quite a bit through a season.

Great Product
Does it’s job. I purchased the double pack and saved a few dollars. Easy to tell when the products life is over. Do not try and clean it, just throw it away and install a new one. Install is easy, and convenient. Will be buying this again.

These do the job!
If you find the screens in your faucets becoming plugged with sediment, chances are you need a sediment filter. The filtration unit may require a plumber to install, but once installed, you can change the cartridges yourself – every three months or as as needed. I like when stores that sell the initial product (filtration canister) also carry consumables like the filter! Canadian Tire does this, in this case!

Great filters
I have been using these filters for a while without issue.

I use the extra fine pore filter to remove rust and sediment. I simply would not go without it. My water is sparkling clear even though there are chuncks of rust covering the filter and Rainfrest container. Love this product…will use it forever.
