Hydrogen Sulphide gives water an obnoxious “rotten egg odour” that can make it unbearable to drink, cook with or bathe in. It also promotes corrosion and tarnishes silver. Higher concentrations are flammable & potentially poisonous.
Manganese is most often present in iron-laden waters. In concentrations over 0.05 mg/L (PPM), it causes black deposits on plumbing fixtures and laundry.
Iron, in concentrations over 0.3 mg/L (PPM), causes reddish-brown deposits (stains) on laundry, dishes, utensils, glassware and appliances like dishwashers, washing machines etc. It can also cause deposits in pipes, pressure tanks & water heaters reducing the available water flow and pressure.
Often two or all three contaminants appear together in water requiring separate treatment units that add to cost and maintenance. Rainfresh GREENSAND filter is specifically designed to remove all three or either contaminant – Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide. Installed after the pressure tank, Rainfresh Greensand filter delivers, clear, clean water by reducing the contaminants to negligible levels.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1) What does the Rainfresh CGFE Greensand Filter do?
The CGFE Filter removes ferrous iron (clear water iron), Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide gas from water, along with some coarse sediment.
Iron is a common element found in most water supplies, particularly well water. In concentrations over 0.3 mg/L (PPM) iron causes deposits on pipelines, pressure tanks, water heaters and water softeners, reducing the available water flow and pressure. It affects the flavour and colour of food and water. Iron causes reddish-brown staining of laundry, porcelain, dishes, utensils and even glassware.
Manganese is most often present in iron-laden waters. In concentrations over 0.05 mg/L (PPM), it causes black deposits on plumbing fixtures and laundry.
Hydrogen Sulphide (commonly called “Sulphur gas”) gives water an obnoxious “rotten egg odour” that can make it unbearable to drink, cook with or bathe in. It also promotes corrosion and tarnishes silver. Higher concentrations are flammable & poisonous.
2) How do I know if I have Ferrous Iron, Manganese or Hydrogen Sulphide?
The best way to find out is to send a water sample to Rainfresh Water Lab for a FREE WATER ANALYSIS
3) How does the Rainfresh CGFE Greensand Filter work?
CGFE Greensand Filter uses the technology of oxidation and filtration. The filter features a special oxidative media that converts iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide into particles which are then strained out by the filter media.
After every 3-4 days, the unit filter automatically goes into a regeneration cycle. During this process, the filter first backwashes and cleans itself by dumping the trapped contaminants down the drain. This is followed by regeneration using a chemical called Potassium Permanganate (POT PERM for short). The cleaning cycle is set for a default time of 2AM and lasts about 90 minutes. It is completely automatic.
4) What is the difference between the Rainfresh CGFE Greensand Filter and CAFE Air Injection Iron Filter?
The CAFE Iron filter removes only ferrous Iron, whereas the CGFE Greensand Filter removes Ferrous Iron + Manganese + Hydrogen Sulphide. If you are only concerned about Iron, CAFE Iron filter should be used, whereas if Iron is accompanied by Manganese or rotten egg odour, then install the CGFE Greensand Filter.
5) My water has a rotten egg odour, but mostly from hot water. Cold water seems fine. Will this system help?
If the smell is coming from only (or predominantly) from hot water, it is likely coming from your water heater. You do not need a water treatment system to solve this problem. Certain types of bacteria react with the anode in the hot water tank, creating the sulphur gas. Simply call your water heater manufacturer or service provider and request that they replace the anode in the water heater with an aluminum anode. After installing the new anode, drain/clean the water heater. This should substantially help and often completely removes the sulphur. Also make sure that the water heater is set for over 60°C.
6) How much water does the CGFE unit use when it backwashes/regenerates?
In each backwash/regeneration cycle (cleaning cycle), the unit uses as much water as a load of laundry.
7) Will the Rainfresh CGFE Greensand Filter work with any kind of water?
There are limitations – pH of the water should be preferably over 6.8, although the unit may work even with slightly lower pH. If your water is acidic, you may need to improve pH before the CGFE filter can be effective. Call Rainfresh for solutions on treating acidic water.
8) Will the Rainfresh CGFE unit work with any kind of water pump?
Yes, the CGFE unit works with submersible as well as jet pumps. The well pump must have a flow rate of over 5 GPM for the unit to operate.
9) Where do I install the Rainfresh CGFE Greensand Filter?
The CGFE Greensand filter should be installed just AFTER the pressure tank before the water pipe divides into hot and cold, so that ALL the water in the house gets treated. If you already have a water softener, the CGFE Iron filter should be installed before the softener. This will not only improve the performance, but also increase the softener life.
10) What do I need to do after the Rainfresh CGFE Greensand Filter is installed?
After the initial programming, you do not have to do anything except periodically adding some chemical (POT PERM) to the chemical tank. POT PERM is a dry powder.
11) Does the CGFE Greensand Filter use electricity?
Yes the unit requires a 110V AC power connection & stays plugged in all the time. However, it uses very little power, as much as a digital alarm clock
12) What happens if there is a power outage?
The unit will retain the time and day for 48 hours. The rest of the programmed settings are stored in a non-volatile memory and will not be lost during a power failure.
13) Is there a pressure loss through the system?
When properly sized, the system produces a very low pressure drop at service flow rates, < 10 psi.
14) Can I connect the backwash water to my septic tank?
Yes. The backwash water can be routed to the septic tank. There is no known adverse effect of the backwash water on septic systems.
15) How long will the filter last?
The filter media will last up to 10 years depending on usage and water conditions. After that just the mineral tank needs to be replaced, this is quite easy to do.

Greensand Iron Manganese Filter from Rainfresh is an excellent whole house system to reduce iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg odour) from well water.

Often two or all three contaminants appear together in water requiring separate treatment units that add to cost and maintenance. Rainfresh GREENSAND iron manganese filter is specifically designed to remove all three or either contaminant – Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide. Installed after the pressure tank, Rainfresh Greensand filter delivers, clear, clean water by reducing the contaminants to negligible levels.
If ferrous iron only is to be removed, the the chemical-free iron removal filter is a better choice.

We love our new greensand filter, our water was undrinkable, smelled bad and stained the laundry and appliances. Now the water is clear, no staining, and no rotten egg smell. Set up was simple and fast. We are very pleased with it.
Our water had everything you do not want in it.I installed the greensand filter and water softener. I needed to see how well this system worked before we drank the water. I have a culligan by my work so I got the water tested there. My house water was better than culligans through their tap. This is a great system
My new well produced the worst imaginable water possible, iron, manganese, plus.
Employed at Home Hardware I knew about the CGFE 948 by “RAINFRESH”.. I now have the freshest water availabe.
